Death of Former President of Peru Fernando Belaunde

We extend our condolences to the Peruvian people on the death of former President Fernando Belaunde. President Belaunde’s legacy will be his important contributions to democracy in Peru and his determination to foster cooperation and tolerance among all members of Peruvian society. He was a gentleman, a great statesman and a true friend of the United States.

We will continue to work with the Government of Peru to consolidate democracy in Peru and the hemisphere, and to encourage the development and reform that will help make Fernando Belaunde’s vision for his country become a reality.
