Uzbekistan: Government's Decision to Withdraw from GUUAM

Question: What is the U.S. reaction to the Government of Uzbekistan's decision to withdraw from the regional organization GUUAM?

Answer: While the organization GUUAM (Georgia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Moldova) has yet to reach its full potential, we continue to believe it is a viable and promising initiative to improve regional relations and enhance cooperation among the member countries. We also believe that membership in GUUAM will help strengthen Uzbekistan's role as a regional leader, and we hope the government of Uzbekistan will reconsider its decision.
