Passage of Framework Agreement Legislation by Macedonian Parliament

The United States welcomes the passage by Macedonia's parliament of fifteen laws required to implement the Ohrid Framework Agreement. We recognize the excellent work of the signatories to the Ohrid Agreement and the Macedonian Parliament toward full implementation of the Framework Agreement.

We believe that the enactment of all remaining Framework Agreement commitments foreseen for this legislative period will constitute the proper and necessary groundwork for the upcoming parliamentary election campaign. We urge Macedonia's political leaders to ensure that outstanding measures -- the law on passports, and a revised Rules of Assembly -- are passed quickly.

Building on today's notable achievements, Macedonia's continued progress on the path of peace and stability will be predicated on the fair conduct of elections free from violence and in conformity with international standards.
