Turkey Assumes Command of International Security Assistance Force

We welcome Turkey’s assumption of command of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Kabul today.  ISAF has played a critical role in providing security in Kabul and environs under British leadership since December, and will continue to ensure that the Afghan Transitional Administration just formed by the Emergency Loya Jirga can operate in a stable and secure environment.  We join the Afghans in strongly supporting Turkey’s assumption of the ISAF command.  This decision demonstrates Turkey’s willingness to assume a leadership role in the war against terrorism and, in particular, to bring about peace and stability in Afghanistan.  In assuming command of ISAF, Turkey has demonstrated yet again the solidarity of the U.S.-Turkey strategic partnership and Turkey’s resolve to combat terrorism.  The United States is strongly committed to supporting Turkey’s lead role in ISAF and is working closely with the Turkish government, the Afghan government, and others to ensure ISAF's success under Turkey’s leadership.
