UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO): Protection of the Cultural Heritage of the Palestinian Territories

Question: Does the Department of State have any comment or reaction to the plan of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to designate Palestinian cultural heritage sites?

Answer:  On June 26 the World Heritage Committee adopted by consensus a resolution on Palestinian cultural heritage sites.  The resolution invites the Director General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Chairman of the Committee to assist in establishing an inventory of the Palestinian cultural heritage, including assessing the state of conservation and measures for its rehabilitation.  The United States joined in the consensus, as did Israeli and Palestinian representatives.
