U.S. Contributes An Additional $12.4 Million to Feed Refugees

The United States is contributing additional funding of $12.4 million to the World Food Program to fill critical gaps in refugee feeding operations across the African continent in Algeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

The United States is the World Food Program’s largest donor. This contribution brings U.S. donations to the World Food Program this calendar year to more than $512 million dollars, primarily through commodity contributions from the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

This additional $12.4 million contribution is provided by the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. This funding will benefit more than one million eight hundred thousand refugees and conflict victims, including Sudanese refugees in Uganda; Burundi, Congolese, and Rwandan refugees in Tanzania; Somali and Sudanese refugees in Kenya and Ethiopia; Angolan and Congolese refugees in Zambia; Western Saharan refugees in Algeria; Eritrean refugees in Sudan; and Sierra Leone and Liberia refugees in West Africa.

This contribution will provide approximately one month's worth of food for these refugees, who are in difficult circumstances owing to breaks in food supply at a time when emergency feeding needs worldwide are burgeoning.

We call on all other donors to contribute generously to the World Food Program to ensure that these critical life-sustaining programs receive the resources they need for the remainder of the year.
