Irish Republican Army Apology to Families of "Non-Combatant" Victims

We welcome today's statement by the Irish Republican Army apologizing to the families of its "non-combatant" victims. It is important in any conflict situation that parties deal honestly with the past, and this is an important step in that direction. We also welcome the Irish Republican Army's reiteration of its commitment to the peace process.

All this underscores the need for the Irish Republican Army and other paramilitaries to permanently renounce violence and forswear the acquisition and possession of arms. Instead, they need to embrace dialogue as the sole means of realizing their political objectives.
