U.S. Department of State Hosts Girls Nation

Ambassador Richard Haass, Director of Policy and Planning, and Ambassador Ruth A. Davis, Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources, will address students as part of this year’s American Legion Girls Nation program, Tuesday, July 23, 2002, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Loy Henderson Conference Room at the U.S. Department of State. The event is open to the press.

Girls Nation involves 96 young women (high school juniors and seniors), two from each state except Hawaii and Louisiana. Students will be available after the speeches for interviews. A list of cities and states represented appears at the close of this media note.

All media planning to attend the event should enter through the 23rd Street entrance. Please present a press credential and photo I.D. Cameras will need to be in place by 1 p.m.

Girls Nation teaches students how government and the democratic process work on the state and national level. The program goals are to develop leadership and pride in American citizens, educate participants about our system of government, instill in participants a greater understanding of American traditions and stimulate a desire to maintain our government processes.

A visit to the U.S. Department of State is an integral part of students understanding U.S. foreign policy. Ambassador Haass will discuss Administration foreign policy priorities. Ambassador Davis will provide an overview of the structure and mission of the Department and the broad range of careers available. Involvement in youth programs reflects an ongoing commitment to foster citizenship and educate young adults on the responsibilities of leadership.
