2002 Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation Awards Demonstrates United States' Commitment to Preserving Heritage in 51 Countries

The Department of State will fund cultural preservation projects in 51 countries (list attached) through the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation, which Congress established in 2001 to assist less developed countries in preserving their cultural heritage and to demonstrate U.S. respect for other cultures. Administered by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) in cooperation with the Department’s Office of the Chief Financial Officer, the 2002 awards will total $1 million.

"The Ambassador’s Fund demonstrates in concrete, visible ways, the US commitment to understanding and preserving the heritage of others," said Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Patricia S. Harrison. "A project in Afghanistan, in collaboration with the Afghan Ministry of Culture, will restore the shrine, mosque and gardens dedicated to the Mogul Emperor Babur, a 16th century descendent of Genghis Khan."

U.S. Ambassadors in 98 of the 120 eligible countries in the developing world responded to the call for proposals of projects supporting the preservation of cultural sites; objects in a site, museum or similar institution; or forms of traditional cultural expression. The proposals displayed a great diversity of areas in need of preservation such as historic buildings, museums and collections, archaeological sites, rare manuscripts, traditional music and language, as well as training in preservation and conservation techniques.
