U.S. Department of State Addresses Global Young Leaders' Conference

An international group of high school students will have the opportunity to learn about the Administration’s environmental priorities and U.S. objectives for the upcoming World Summit on Sustainable Development when the Global Young Leaders’ Conference comes to the U.S. Department of State on Tuesday, July 30, 2002.

Assistant Secretary for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, John F. Turner, will address the group from 2:00–3:00 p.m. in the Loy Henderson Conference Room at the State Department. The event is open to the press.

The Global Young Leaders Conference is a 12-day program (July 28-August 8) that provides students with the opportunity to learn and exchange ideas with prominent leaders in Washington, D.C. and New York City. The conference is a program organized by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council. The participants represent about 375 high school students from the United States and 48 foreign countries.

Assistant Secretary Turner will discuss the work of the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs as well as the Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa (August 26 - September 4, 2002). The U.S. Department of State has hosted the Global Young Leaders’ Conference for four sessions this summer. Briefings included Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Richard Boucher, Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs Patricia Harrison, and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Economic and Business Affairs Shaun Donnelly. State Department involvement in youth programs reflects an ongoing commitment to foster citizenship and educate young adults on the responsibilities of leadership.

Students will be available after the speeches for interviews. A list of cities and states represented is attached.

All media planning to attend the event should enter through the 23rd Street entrance. Please present a press credential and photo I.D. Cameras will need to be in place by 1:30 p.m.
