Japan - Deputy Secretary's Meeting with Minister of State Jin Murai

QUESTION: Can you provide a read-out of the Deputy Secretary's meeting with Jin Murai, Minister of State for Disaster Management and Chairman of the National Public Safety Commission?

ANSWER: Minister of State Murai paid a courtesy call today, August 5, 2002, on Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage. They exchanged views on issues of mutual concern as part of our ongoing dialogue. The Deputy Secretary expressed appreciation for Japan's contributions to the counterterrorism campaign. He also praised progress that has been achieved in discussions between U.S. and Japanese experts on a mutual legal assistance treaty.
