Anniversary of Ohrid Framework Agreement

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the signing of the Ohrid Framework Agreement, which laid a firm foundation for Macedonia's future peaceful development on the path of Euro-Atlantic integration. We recognize President Trajkovski and Macedonia's political leadership for the significant progress they have made in enacting Framework Agreement commitments, which have strengthened Macedonia's democracy by helping to meet the political aspirations of all its citizens. While important work remains for the next government, the Agreement's implementation is well-advanced and the groundwork for upcoming parliamentary elections has been accomplished.

Macedonia has much to be proud of: its political leaders and citizens made conscious and courageous decisions to reduce tensions, build bridges between ethnic communities, and reinforce the legal framework for the advancement of civil society within Macedonia. We call on all in Macedonia to support, contribute to, and build upon this momentum toward lasting peace, stability, and growth.

Macedonia's upcoming democratic elections must serve to solidify the gains made this past year. The world will be watching to see how Macedonia conducts these elections. We look to Macedonia's leaders to ensure that the elections are fair, free from violence, in conformity with international standards, and that the results are respected.

The United States, together with the European Union, our NATO Allies and OSCE partners, will continue to stand behind Macedonia, working with its democratically elected governments to support peace, the continued development of its democratic institutions, and its long-term economic renewal.
