WSSD: Signature Partnerships and the Millennium Challenge Account

Question: Regarding the signature partnerships announced today at the World Summit on Sustainable Development, does any of the funding come from the Millennium Challenge Account and is it tied to good governance?

Answer:

  • The Millennium Challenge Account will fund initiatives to help developing nations that demonstrate a strong commitment to ruling justly, investing in people, and promoting economic freedom, which are the foundations for broad-based, lasting development.
  • None of the funding currently identified for signature partnerships comes from the Millennium Challenge Account.
  • The signature partnerships are designed to support good governance.  Since they include participation by partners from the business sector, non-governmental organizations, and civil society, they will contribute to good governance through greater participation and transparency.
