Summit Institute for Sustainable Development

  • The Summit Institute for Sustainable Development (SISD) is a capacity-building program, developed by the Smithsonian Institution, in partnership with many U.S. and United Nations agencies, and civil society organizations, and with support from the South African Ministry of Education. The purpose of the Institute is to provide a mechanism for experts to share their expertise and disseminate information on practical approaches to achieving sustainable development to participants at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD).
  • Located at St. David’s Marist College in Johannesburg, SISD will run from August 26 through September 5, 2002. The Institute will offer over 70 "how-to" classes for Summit delegates on topics ranging from promoting transparency through community involvement, to environmental enforcement and compliance, to procedures for developing clean and safe water delivery systems. The Institute is free and is expected to attract 2000 participants.
  • Following the Summit, the computers used at the Institute will be donated to public schools in the area.
