Remarks to the Press after the Secretary of State's WSSD Intervention

MR. BOUCHER: First of all, his (the Secretary's) comment was that this kind of thing happens. He had people breaking into remarks about getting good food to starving people, breaking into remarks about sending AIDS assistance and education and drugs to people afflicted in Africa. I’m confident that that interruption doesn’t represent a widespread opinion, nor does it represent the kind of progress and serious effort that we are making here at the conference.

He was actually delayed getting to his next meeting because of all the people coming up to shake his hand and congratulating him as he exited the hall. So that is pretty much all there is to say.

QUESTION: In the bilat with the Danish Foreign Minister, did the Secretary discuss EU positions on a possible US policy on Iraq or approach to Iraq?

MR. BOUCHER: I’ll do the briefing later on specific bilats. In his meetings today, he talked about Iraq with various people; they talked about the Middle East fairly consistently with various people and a number of other subjects. They talked about the International Criminal Court, Article 98 procedures. He met with Prodi after the speech; that’s the meeting he was late for. He talked about, and they talked about, the need for international action because Saddam Hussein’s defiance is against the international community and against the UN resolutions.

I’ll leave it at that.
