Reeker, Deputy Spokesman Washington, DC September 11, 2002 Designation of the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement Under UNSC Resolutions 1267 and 1390Today the United States, along with China, Afghanistan, and Kyrgyzstan, asked the relevant United Nations sanctions committee to designate the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) under UN Security Council Resolutions 1267 and 1390, which would require member states to freeze assets of this group without delay and prohibit their nationals or persons in their territories from making available any funds or other resources to this group. Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement is a violent group believed responsible for committing numerous acts of terrorism in China, including bombings of buses, movie theaters, department stores, markets, and hotels; assassination; and arson. The United States had earlier designated the ETIM under Executive Order 13224; the group's name was added to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) website on September 3. The fact that this request was made jointly shows that other countries in the region share our concern about the terrorist threat posed by this group. We hope the relevant United Nations sanctions committee will respond positively to the request so that member states will be required to prohibit funding for this group. |
