Pre-Election Violence in Macedonia

The United States strongly condemns the murder of a policeman near Bogovinje, Macedonia, on September 12.  Our condolences go to his family.  Police and judicial authorities should take appropriate steps to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice in accordance with Macedonian law.

This act of violence, coming three days before September 15 polls, appears intended to undermine the interests of all citizens of Macedonia in free, fair, and peaceful democratic elections in the spirit of the Ohrid Framework Agreement.  We appeal to all political and party leaders and citizens to resist such provocations and reject those who employ violence or other forms of intimidation in the run-up to Sunday's election.

We urge all registered voters in Macedonia to cast their ballots and make their voices heard on September 15 in elections that express the true will of all citizens.  Together with our partners in the international community, the United States will continue to work with Macedonian authorities to ensure a secure and stable environment on election day and beyond.
