Nicaragua: Decision to Replace National Assembly Leadership

The United States notes the decision taken on September 19 by the Nicaraguan National Assembly to replace its Executive Council, headed by former President Aleman.  This decision will enable the National Assembly, in cooperation with the administration of President Enrique Bolaños, to renew its efforts to further Nicaragua’s ambitious development agenda.  The United States shares with the government of Nicaragua the goals of improving Nicaragua’s economy, creating jobs, fighting poverty and strengthening democratic institutions.

We also endorse the public statements of Cesar Gaviria, Secretary General of the Organization of American States, in support of the Nicaraguan Government’s efforts to combat corruption.  We look forward to continuing to work together with our partners in Nicaragua to make progress toward reaching mutual goals.
