Turkey: Prohibiting a Candidate from Running in Elections

QUESTION:  Can you comment on Turkey’s decision on Friday prohibiting the leader of the Justice and Development Party , Recep Tayyip Erdogan, from running as a candidate in elections?

ANSWER:  We are following the upcoming Turkish elections (scheduled for November 3) with great interest. The United States supports democracy and free and open debate -- including in elections.
