Secretary of State Colin L. Powell to Address the German-American Fulbright Program 50th Anniversary Commemoration

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will deliver opening remarks at the reception commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the German-American Fulbright Program on Thursday, October 10, 2002 at 6:30 p.m. in the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin Franklin Room.

The German-American Fulbright Program, sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is the largest and most varied Fulbright program in the world. It has sponsored over 30,000 Americans and Germans since 1952, when the Federal Republic of Germany became the 25th member to join the Fulbright Program. Each year, approximately 700 grants are awarded through the German-American Fulbright Program based on open competition.

The Secretary’s remarks will be open for press coverage; the Secretary will not be taking questions. Press interested in attending should arrive at C street entrance.

Pre-set time for cameras: 5:00 p.m.
Final access time for all press: 6:00 p.m.

Media representatives may cover this event upon presentation of either (1) a U.S. government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a photo ID issued by the employing media organization, or (3) a letter on official letterhead from their news organization verifying their employment as a journalists, accompanied by an official photo ID (drivers’ license or passport).
