Press Statement Richard Boucher, Spokesman Washington, DC October 15, 2002
Presidential Elections in SerbiaThe United States joins the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and other international observers in recognizing that the presidential elections in Serbia on Sunday were conducted in a peaceful and democratic manner. We are disappointed that voter participation in Sunday's elections fell below the 50% threshold of eligible voters required for a new President to be elected.
We expect the democratic process in Serbia to continue. The United States strongly supports the OSCE's recommendation that significant changes be made in the Serbian election laws to allow the democratic process to continue. When new elections are scheduled, we urge the Serbian people to participate in those elections, so that the democratic and economic reforms already underway will continue -- bringing Serbia closer to integration with Euro-Atlantic institutions.
