Japan: Interest in Charles Jenkins
Question: Has Japan asked the U.S. to amnesty the American defector married to one of the Japanese abducted by North Korea? Are there charges pending against him?
Answer: The Japanese government, in exploring ways in which the five abductees currently visiting Japan from North Korea might be permanently repatriated to Japan, have brought to our attention details regarding Sgt. Charles Jenkins, a member of the U.S. Army who defected to North Korea in 1965. Sgt. Jenkins is married to one of the abductees.
I refer you to the Department of Defense for military-related issues.
