Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage To Participate in Ceremony Sending Assistance to Uzbekistan

On Thursday, October 24, Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage will participate in a ceremony at Andrews Air Force Base to send off a special humanitarian assistance flight with an estimated $10 million worth of medicines and medical supplies to Uzbekistan. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m.

A delegation of more than forty medical professionals, business leaders and other volunteers will travel aboard the special U.S. Air Force C-5 cargo aircraft to distribute the medicines and supplies throughout Uzbekistan. The donation ceremony will mark the tenth anniversary of the State Department's partnership with Heart to Heart International and Physicians With Heart to assist the most needy populations of the newly established countries of the former Soviet Union.

The ceremony is open for press coverage. Those interested in covering the ceremony should report to the Andrews Air Force Base Visitor Center at the Andrews Main Gate by 8:00.a.m. and contact the Base Public Affairs office at (301) 981-4434.
