2002 Australia-U.S. Ministerial Meeting (Ausmin)

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld will host Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer and Defense Minister Robert Hill at the Fifteenth Australia-U.S. Ministerial (AUSMIN) at the Department of State on Tuesday, October 29, 2002.

The 2002 Ministerial will discuss developments of mutual interest and importance since the last AUSMIN held in July 2001 in Canberra. This year’s meeting is expected to focus on global and regional issues, including the Global War on Terrorism and developments in Indonesia, Iraq, and the Korean Peninsula. The talks will also cover issues on the global security agenda such as non-proliferation, missile defense and matters relating to the U.S.-Australia alliance.

The Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Peter Pace; Commander in Chief, Pacific Command, Admiral Thomas Fargo; and Chief of the Australian Defense Force, General Peter Cosgrove, will also participate.

There will be a joint press availability involving the four Ministers at 3:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the day's formal meeting. This event will be held in the Department of State’s Benjamin Franklin Room and will be open for press coverage.

There will also be a camera spray at 1:30 p.m. for the exchange of letters involving Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld and Australian Defense Minister Hill on Australia's participation in the Joint Strike Fighter Project. This event will be held in the Department of State’s Treaty Room.

Indentification: Press who wish to attend these events should arrive at the 23rd Street entrance (between C and D Streets, NW) and must present either (1) A U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card or (3) letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification card (driver's license, passport). Press should allow adequate time to process through security.
