AIDS Video Wins VOA Award For Excellence In Programming

The Voice of America has announced the selection of “AIDS in Africa: A Fight for Survival” as the winner of its Award for Excellence in Programming.

The video was filmed in October 2000 in Uganda, South Africa, Zambia, and Senegal documenting the HIV/AIDS crisis on the continent.  The 30-minute documentary, produced on a limited budget of $50,000, featured interviews with people with HIV and other national and international officials actively involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Airing on WORLDNET/VOA Television in April 2001 to Africa, Europe, and other regions around the world, the video was made available for use by VOA, WorldNet, VOA-TV, the State Department, embassies and other International Broadcasting Bureau  affiliate stations in Africa.  A shorter version of the video became the story line for the shows “Africa Journal,” “Straight Talk Africa” and “This Week,” among other video programming.  The documentary’s audio is adaptable for radio audiences.

The video was developed under the guidance of Nancy Carter-Foster, U.S. Department of State, and Greg Pirio, IBB, and was produced by Diane Butts, Brian Padden and photographer Darrell Allen, IBB/VOA.
