Secretary Powell's Meeting with General Hilmi Ozkok, Chief of Turkish General Staff

Question: What did the Secretary and Turkish General Ozkok discuss when they met earlier this week?

Answer: Secretary Powell met here Tuesday (November 5) with General Hilmi Ozkok, the new Chief of the Turkish General Staff. General Ozkok is here visiting the United States at the invitation of the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Myers.

Secretary Powell thanked General Ozkok for Turkey's contributions to the war against terrorism, and reiterated the need for the international coalition to remain steadfast against continuing terrorist threats. The two reaffirmed the strength of the bilateral relationship, and discussed a number of  political and security issues of mutual concern, including Iraq, Cyprus, and Turkey's accession to the European Union, which the United States strongly supports.
