Nepal: Murder of U.S. Embassy Guard

Question:  What can you tell us about the murder in Kathmandu of one of the guards for the U.S. embassy?  Was this an attack by the Maoists?

Answer:   On Saturday afternoon, November 9, a U.S. Embassy contract guard was murdered at his residence.  The victim had been employed as a guard for less than one month.  At the time of his death, he was off duty and out of uniform

We are working with Nepali law enforcement agencies that are conducting an investigation of this crime.  So far there has been no determination of who was responsible or what their motive was. To date, no direct evidence has surfaced to conclude that the victim's murder was related to his employment with the U.S. Embassy.

We are very saddened and concerned about the killing, especially in light of the previous murder of another Embassy security guard last December. Our deepest sympathies go out to the victim's family and loved ones.
