Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson to Co-Sponsor World AIDS Day Commemoration

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson will co-sponsor a commemoration of World AIDS Day on Tuesday, December 3, 2002. The event will take place in the Diplomatic Reception Rooms of the Department of State and will include foreign ambassadors accredited to the United States, senior Administration officials, and members of Congress. Secretaries Powell and Thompson and Dr. Joe O’Neill, Director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, will deliver remarks from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the Department of State’s Benjamin Franklin Room. Those remarks are open for press coverage.

World AIDS Day is marked annually on December 1 to recognize successes in the fight against HIV/AIDS and to focus global attention on the challenges that remain. The commemorative event at the State Department will be a call to action for national leaders to commit their voices to the fight against HIV/AIDS. To combat fear, prejudice, and discrimination, all leaders can make a difference by being outspoken, setting examples, establishing effective policies, and spurring partnerships with community-based and faith-based organizations. Attached are related fact sheets on the actions taken by the U.S. in support of the fight against HIV/AIDS and on the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

Press who intend to cover the delivery of remarks should enter through the 23rd Street Entrance of the State Department’s Harry S Truman Building.

Pre-set time for cameras: 10:15 AM

Final Access time for all press: 10:30 AM

Media representatives may cover this event upon presentation of either (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a photo ID issued by the employing media organization, or (3) a letter on official letterhead from their news organization verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo ID (drivers’ license or passport).
