Answer: Mr. Shannon arrived in Caracas Thursday, December 12. He is consulting with Ambassador Shapiro and meeting with government and opposition leaders, as well as Organization of American States Secretary General Gaviria. His visit is an expression of our concern with the situation in Venezuela. He will convey our view in favor of a peaceful, constitutional, democratic and electoral solution to the crisis. He will also reiterate our support for OAS Secretary General Gaviria’s efforts to mediate dialogue. Shannon returns to Washington this weekend. |
