Taken Question From January 28, 2002 Daily Press Briefing

Responses From Arab Governments

QUESTION: Has the State Department received messages from Arab governments like, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia on the importance of the US continuing to deal with Arafat?

ANSWER:  We are in regular contact with regional leaders regarding the situation between the Israelis and Palestinians.

Both we and the Arab states agree that it is essential -- as Secretary Powell said on Friday -- that we deal with the leaders who are there now if we are to bring an end to violence and terror.
