Question Taken at Daily Press Briefing of January 31

India-Pakistan: Reports of Infiltration Across Line of Control

Question:  Any comment about reports of significant movements from Pakistan across the Line of Control in Kashmir?

Answer:  We have seen media reports of clashes along the Line of Control in Kashmir between Indian forces and infiltrators.

Although we are not able to confirm specific reports, we believe that any such activity can only heighten tensions between the two countries and should cease.

We remain concerned that militant elements opposed to a peaceful resolution could attempt to undermine the efforts of India and Pakistan to reduce tensions and work toward a settlement of their differences.  We urge both countries to continue to take steps to reduce tensions, strengthen confidence and resolve their differences through dialogue.
