Formation of Government Coalition in Kosovo

The United States congratulates the people of Kosovo today on the formation of their first democratically elected government. This step represents a significant move forward for democracy and provisional self-governance for Kosovo under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244.

The election of a President and Prime Minister and confirmation of a Cabinet will accelerate the transfer of authority from UNMIK to Kosovo's elected representatives. As this process goes forward, the international community will expect Kosovo's new leaders to use their authority to foster institutions of self-governance that are inclusive, accountable and efficient, and to build a society based upon the principles of freedom, equality and tolerance.

We congratulate President Ibrahim Rugova, Prime Minister Bajram Rexhepi and Assembly President Nexhat Daci, and wish them well as they begin their important work.
