Macedonia: Passage of Amnesty Law

The United States commends Macedonia's political leadership on the passage March 7 of an amnesty law. This is an important milestone in the fulfillment of the Ohrid Framework Agreement and a key ingredient for peace and reconciliation in Macedonia.

Together with ongoing efforts to restore a regular multiethnic police presence throughout the former conflict areas, the amnesty law reflects the positive progress being made toward full implementation of the Framework Agreement.

It is essential for all in Macedonia to support and advance peace in the spirit of the Framework Agreement, and reject forcefully any that advocate a recourse to violence.

The United States looks forward to the March 12 international donors' conference for Macedonia and to making a significant contribution to international efforts to help Macedonia fully implement the Framework Agreement.
