Ukraine: Allegations of Arms Transfers to Iraq

Question: Has the State Department been in touch with the government of Ukraine over allegations of arms transfers to Iraq?

Answer: We view any report of actual or proposed transfers of weapons or weapons-related materials to Iraq -- by any country -- with serious concern. We have no doubt about Iraq's desire to acquire sophisticated weapons systems.

You can be assured that if we find any proliferation of weapons to Iraq from any country, we will take appropriate action.

To date, we have seen no credible evidence that the "Kolchuga" system was transferred to Iraq. We investigate closely any relevant information as we receive it.

The Ukrainian government has stated that such a transfer has not and will not happen. We expect Ukraine to continue to ensure no such transfer occurs.
