Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will travel to the semi-annual meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers in Reykjavik, Iceland, from May 13 to 15, 2002. The Secretary will depart from Washington on Monday, May 13 and return Wednesday, May 15. The NATO ministers will use this meeting as an opportunity to make further progress on the agenda for the upcoming Prague Summit in November 2002. The U.S. has proposed the Prague Summit focus on: "new capabilities, new members and new relationships." This focus will help ensure NATO has the capabilities needed to meet current and future threats; expand NATO to include those democracies that seek membership and are able to shoulder the responsibilities it brings; and intensify NATO's relationships with Russia, Ukraine and other partners. In Reykjavik, NATO Foreign Ministers will also meet with Russian Foreign Minister Ivanov to finalize plans for a new NATO-Russia Council and for the NATO-Russia Summit in Rome, Italy on May 28, 2002. The NATO-Ukraine Commission and the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council will also meet in Reykjavik at the ministerial level. Released on May 7, 2002 |
