Assistant Secretary Bloomfield Hosts Political-Military Talks with Chilean Delegation

Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Lincoln P. Bloomfield, Jr. hosted political-military talks with his Chilean counterpart at the State Department on January 8, 2003. The day-long discussions covered regional security, peacekeeping, non-proliferation and other issues of mutual interest.

The Chilean delegation was led by Ambassador Luis Winter, Director of the Special Policy Directorate for the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Also in the delegation were Rear Admiral Daniel Arellano, Defense and Naval Attache for the Chilean Embassy in Washington; MajGen Jose Gaete, Assistant Defense and Military; Marcos Robledo, Special Advisor to the Minister of Defense; Col Raul Panailillo, Air Force Attache and Head of Air Force Mission; Col Max Steinmeyer, Head of the International Affairs Section, Joint Chief of Staff for National Defense; Eduardo Galvez, Embassy Counselor for Political-Military Affairs; Frederik Heller, Embassy Counselor; Julio Fiol, First Secretary and Head of the Foreign Ministry’s Department for Disarmament and International Security; and Rodrigo Hume, Second Secretary in the Chilean Mission to the OAS.

The U.S. delegation included representatives from the State Department’s Bureaus of Political-Military Affairs, Arms Control, and Western Hemisphere Affairs; the American Embassy in Santiago; the Joint Staff; the Department of Defense; and U.S. Southern Command.

These annual consultations demonstrate the high level of friendship and cooperation between the United States and Chile.
