China: Arrest of American Citizen

Question:   What is the status of American citizen Chuck Lee (also known as Charles Li), who was arrested in China?

Answer:   United States citizen Chuck Lee was arrested in Guangzhou on January 22, 2003, for alleged sabotage of radio and television broadcasting systems in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province. He was transferred to the Yangzhou Municipal Detention Center on January 24. Chinese officials are investigating the case and have not yet filed formal charges against Mr. Lee. No trial date has been set.

Mr. Lee was visited in prison by a consular officer from the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai on January 28. The consulate continues to monitor Mr. Lee’s case closely.
