4 Days Left to Register for the Foreign Service Written Exam

Registration for the 2003 Foreign Service Written Exam will close at midnight on Saturday, March 15, 2003.

The U.S. Department of State continues to seek public service-minded U.S. citizens who reflect the skills and diversity of the nation and seek to make a difference in the world.

Herro Mustafa, age 30, is just one example of someone who is making a difference in the Foreign Service. Multi-lingual in Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish, Spanish and Greek, Ms. Mustafa has served overseas in Athens and in Beirut. While in Athens, Ms. Mustafa served as a Political Officer covering the human rights and trafficking in persons portfolios. She was nominated for the Department of State’s Human Rights and Democracy Achievement award and received superior and meritorious honor awards for her work.

Ms. Mustafa is currently serving in Beirut in the Consular Section. She has been involved in resolving several high profile child custody cases and in supporting the opening of Beirut's new visa section after a 17-year hiatus. She will be heading back to Washington, D.C., this summer to work on the Iran desk.

“I was inspired to join the U.S. Foreign Service by my own experience as a Kurdish refugee from Iraq. What I like most about being a Foreign Service officer is that I am able to give back to others, as well as explore and learn from various cultures around the world,” said Ms. Mustafa.
