Security Situation in Afghanistan

We have been following with concern the recent security incidents directed at U.S. forces, non -governmental organizations, and other foreign nationals in Afghanistan. On March 29, two U.S. soldiers were ambushed and killed in the southern Helmand Province. On March 27, an International Committee of the Red Cross employee was pulled from his vehicle and killed in Uruzgan Province. These attacks have complicated the international community’s ability to carry out assistance activities in some parts of Afghanistan.

We regret these tragic incidents and send our sincere condolences to the families of the victims.

The United States works closely with and appreciates the efforts of the many non-governmental organizations and international organizations working to help rebuild Afghanistan. We believe that it is essential that these organizations be able to continue their work in safety and security.

Operation Enduring Freedom in coordination with our coalition partners and with the Afghan government continues to search for and neutralize the remnants of al ‘Qaida and the Taliban. We support an effective International Security Assistance Force, which provides stability in Kabul.

The United States, working with Afghanistan, is also creating Provincial Reconstruction Teams at locations throughout Afghanistan to engage in reconstruction activities while enhancing security and stability in the provinces. These teams will generally consist of U.S. Army Civil Affairs units and Special Operations teams, State Department officers and United States Agency for International Development officials.

The United States is a long-term partner in Afghanistan’s reconstruction, and we will stay the course there, irrespective of our responsibilities elsewhere.
