Department of State Ranks as Primary Employer of Presidential Management Interns in the Federal Government

Reinforcing its commitment to recruit the best and the brightest, the State Department will hire approximately 40 Presidential Management Interns (PMIs) this year. Despite being one of the smallest agencies in the federal government, these new internships place the State Department as one of the largest employers of PMIs in the federal government, second only to the Department of Health and Human Services.

An Office of Personnel Management job fair is scheduled for April 15 and 16 at the new Washington Convention Center located at 900 Ninth Street, N.W., where PMIs will be able to apply for Department of State positions. If you are interested in work that makes a world of difference, visit the State Department booth at the fair or visit www.careers.state.gov for State Department job listings.

The Department of State has hired 308 PMIs since 1997, and has successfully converted 148 of these to permanent positions. The Department is using the PMI program as part of its succession planning to ensure that we have the leadership pipeline we must maintain for the day when Baby Boomers begin to retire in increasing numbers. This is part of our strategic human capital initiative under the President’s Management Agenda.
