Secretary of State Colin L. Powell Honors Two U.S. Veterans with First Harrison H. Schmitt Leadership Awards for Fulbright Alumni

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will present the first two Harrison H. Schmitt Leadership Awards to U.S. veterans Raymond Jefferson and Jason Santamaria on Tuesday, July 29 at 4:30 p.m. in the Benjamin Franklin Room of the U.S. Department of State. The Harrison H. Schmitt Leadership Award honors recent alumni of the Fulbright Student Program who demonstrate extraordinary leadership and dedication to public service and mutual understanding. The award’s namesake, former U.S. Senator, astronaut, and Fulbright U.S. student to Norway, Dr. Harrison Schmitt will also be in attendance.

This year’s recipients are Raymond Jefferson, deputy director of the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, and Jason Santamaria, management consultant and author of the forthcoming “The Marine Corps Way: Using Maneuver Warfare to Lead a Winning Organization.” Raymond Jefferson is a 1988 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served in the U.S. Army from 1988-99. He was a 2001-02 Fulbright student to Singapore. Jason Santamaria is a 1993 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and served as an artillery officer in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1994-98. He was a 1993-94 Fulbright student to Venezuela.

This event is open for press coverage.
    Pre-set time for cameras is 3:30 p.m. from the 23rd Street entrance.
    Final access time for all press is 4:15 p.m. from the C Street entrance.

Media representatives may cover this event upon presentation of one of the following: (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a photo ID issued by employing media organization, or (3) a letter on official letterhead from employing organization verifying employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo ID (driver’s license or passport).
