Liberia: Deputy Secretary Armitage Meets With Archbishop Michael Francis

Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage met today with Archbishop Michael Francis, Archbishop of Monrovia and Chair of the Inter-Religious Council of Liberia. During their cordial half-hour meeting at the State Department, the Archbishop briefed the Deputy Secretary on the situation in Liberia and the region. The Deputy Secretary outlined the steps the U.S. is taking to assist ECOWAS forces in reestablishing the ceasefire in Liberia and restoring peace to stabilize the situation. The Archbishop stressed the key historic role he feels the United States can and should play in bringing about a peaceful solution to the Liberian conflict.

The Archbishop is in the United States on a visit sponsored by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights.
