Secretary's Meeting with New UN Special Representative to Kosovo, Harri Holkeri

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell met today with the new United Nations Special Representative to Kosovo, former Prime Minister of Finland, Harri Holkeri. During their meeting, Secretary Powell offered our support and gratitude to Mr. Holkeri as he begins his work as Special Representative. The Secretary reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to helping build a democratic, multi-ethnic Kosovo. Mr. Holkeri's appointment comes at an important time for Kosovo, as it seeks to achieve internationally-endorsed standards, including building democratic institutions, establishing rule of law, promoting the return of displaced persons and refugees, and beginning a dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. Chief of Mission of the U.S. Office in Pristina, Marcie Ries, also took part in the meeting.
