Question Taken at Daily Press Briefing of August 18, 2003

Saudi Arabia: New Legislation

Question:   Any comment on recent anti-terrorism rules/legislation passed in Saudi Arabia?

Answer:

  • We understand that the Government of Saudi Arabia passed an anti-money laundering law today. This is a very positive step.
  • Other counterterrorism finance measures that would make charities more transparent are also under consideration. I would refer you to Saudi authorities for specific details.
  • The United States has worked closely with the Saudis on counterterrorism finance and has encouraged them to tighten laws in order to make it more difficult for terrorists to obtain money and abuse charities.
  • We are very pleased that Saudi Arabia appears to be taking effective action in this area.
