Press Coverage for Six Party Talks in Beijing

The Department of State has been asked by the People’s Republic of China to provide information on which U.S. media personnel wish to travel to Beijing to cover the August 27-29 Six-Party Talks involving the United States, People’s Republic of China, Russia, Japan, and South and North Korea. We understand that China has made similar requests to the other countries that will attend the talks.

While we seek to facilitate efforts by those seeking to cover this event, U.S. media organizations and individuals should understand that providing information to us to pass to the Chinese will not guarantee any specific Chinese action. Moreover, the U.S. believes -- and will convey to China our view -- that any information we furnish cannot be regarded as exhaustive or exclusive by China in making its decisions regarding the issuance of credentials, visas, or other documents to journalists seeking to cover this meeting.

U.S. media organizations interested in covering the Beijing meeting should provide by 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, the names, titles, media organizations, passport information (including issuing country, passport number, place and date of issuance) for individuals – regardless of their nationality or present country of assignment – who wish to cover the Beijing meeting to Kenneth Bailes, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs (Tel. 202-647-2538, Fax. 202-647-0996). Please include information regarding any special equipment that individuals might wish to bring to Beijing.
