Support for Appointment of National Electoral Commission in Venezuela

The United States joins Secretary General Gaviria of the Organization of American States in welcoming the designation of the new National Electoral Commission in Venezuela. This is an important and necessary step in fulfilling the commitments made in the May 29 agreement between the government and the opposition. We expect that this decision will facilitate the peaceful, democratic, constitutional and electoral solution to Venezuela’s political crisis as called for in OAS Permanent Council Resolution 833.
