Burma - Condition of Aung San Suu Kyi

Question:  Can the Department say how long Aung San Suu Kyi has been on a hunger strike? What is the state of her health?

Answer:  We believe the information reported by our embassy in Rangoon to be credible, but we do not wish to provide details regarding sourcing.

We are very concerned about the state of Aung San Suu Kyi's health. Unfortunately, neither we nor others in the international community have had access to her for some time, and have not been able to make any first hand assessment of her situation or condition. She and all other political prisoners being held in Burma should be immediately released.
