Special UN Economic and Social Council Election International Narcotics Control Board: Selection of U.S. Candidate Ambassador Mel Levitsky

The United States is pleased to note the election of former U.S. Ambassador Melvyn Levitsky to the International Narcotics Control Board by the members of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The International Narcotics Control Board is the independent United Nations agency responsible for monitoring and promoting the high standards of drug control codified by international law, particularly the three United Nations Drug Control Conventions. Former U.S. Ambassador Levitsky has played a critical role in this mission over the course of his career in government and the private sector.

From 1989 until 1994, Ambassador Levitsky served as the Department of State’s most senior official dealing with issues of international narcotics control. More recently, Ambassador Levitsky has contributed toward a greater understanding of solutions towards the illicit drug trade through his academic pursuits; he is currently a Professor of International Relations and Public Administration at Syracuse University's Maxwell School, and an active participant in several notable non-governmental associations concerned with finding solutions to the problems of illegal drugs, including as a board member on the Drug Free America Foundation.
