| Press Statement Richard Boucher, Spokesman Washington, DC December 1, 2003 World AIDS DayDecember 1 is World AIDS Day, which is commemorated each year to highlight the successes and remind us of the remaining challenges in the global fight against HIV/AIDS.
The United States is proud of combating the global HIV/AIDS pandemic. On January 23, President Bush announced an historic five-year, $15 billion Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief that virtually triples the U.S. commitment to international AIDS assistance. The President’s Emergency Plan will prevent 7 million HIV infections, provide antiretroviral drugs to 2 million people living with HIV/AIDS, and provide care for 10 million people affected by HIV/AIDS, including children orphaned by the disease.
In his World AIDS Day message Secretary Powell said, “In the worldwide fight against AIDS, every nation, large or small, developed or developing, must be a leader. And in the fight against AIDS, all countries have a strong and committed ally in the United States of America.”
Global AIDS Coordinator Ambassador Randall L. Tobias is commemorating World AIDS Day in Zambia with Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson and an international delegation visiting several African countries this week.
