U.S. Delegation to Rwanda for the 10th Commemoration of the Rwandan Genocide

Ambassador Pierre-Richard Prosper, the U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues, will lead the U.S. Delegation to Rwanda for the 10th anniversary Commemoration of the Rwandan Genocide, which will take place in Kigali, Rwanda from April 7-8. The delegation also will include USAID Deputy Administrator Frederick Schieck and other government and private sector representatives. Together they will participate in official Commemoration events, including a “Night of Mourning” ceremony and an US Embassy ceremony for Foreign Service nationals who lived through those events.

The Commemoration will draw renewed attention to one of the most difficult chapters in recent history. The 1994 Rwanda Genocide was one of the most horrific slaughters of innocent civilians of the century.

The United States has worked continuously to help bring those responsible for these heinous acts to justice, and we continue to stand with the people of Rwanda as they seek to rebuild their country in the aftermath of the Genocide. The U.S. delegation will recall the underlying causes of those events, and will pledge our commitment to work to help ensure that they never happen again.
